8/25/2023 0 Comments Splice fiber optic cable costEither my assigned fiber is taken, it’s dead, or it’s coming out of the wrong port. But seriously this is some of the worst case Oreos and cabinet builds I’ve ever dealt with in 6 years. I’m getting 25 for the house and 25 for the tap. I waste more time trouble shooting than actually getting the prep and splice done. Every case every tray is just wrong labeling or the fiber is wrong port in cabinet. Also this current job I’ve been working is a mess. I also would like to know what should I expect for just adding in house drops, prepping and splicing at the house and on ladder at the tap. But now that I have my own equipment and vehicle. I was getting paid a little on the short end but that’s because I had a lot accommodated, like housing equipment and vehicles. But it was only for my family owned company. So I have been splicing for almost 6 years now. That's pretty standard for contractor vs. Someone working on W-2 for an employer can expect to get paid about half that. ![]() My travel costs are absurd to avoid people abusing the privilege of getting someone with engineering qualifications/knowledge out to "any old jobsite". as well as insurance, payroll taxes and such but not including travel/per-diem or cases/trays and such. This is fully loaded cost billed to the customer including consumables like cleaning fluids, swabs, tapes, splice sleeves, wear/tear on the equipment, etc. I can, however, incorporate some training at those prices if the customer has new hires they want to have watch over my shoulder.Ĭompetitive "splice and go" rates are going to be a bit lower in my market (Midwest). I'm not the cheapest, and I don't pretend to be since my background and expertise is more on the engineering side. I usually decline or refer aerial jobs where the client can't pull the loop down for me since I don't have a bucket truck and am not eager to climb poles or use cable ladders. ![]() Inside or outside usually doesn't much matter, but if it's outside and the weather is nasty I charge for the time to set up a canopy if I can't get things into a trailer and also change an extra "this sucks" fee if the weather is especially bad.Ĭould be more if I have to spend a lot of time wrangling the cable in/out of the handhole, frame, or storage loop and potentially a lot more if the site is not readily accessible. I don't do epoxy and field polish, nor do I bother with mechanical terminations as they suck. Terminations in patch bays ends up being similar and is about the same whether you use cassettes, trays, or fan-out kits and splice-on terminations. ![]() Add another $50-75 to prep a new case endspan or $100-150 for a new case midspan with overcut on an existing loop. I usually bill T&M, but it works out to about $175-250 for setup/teardown per site and $4-7 per fiber for prep in a new tray in an existing case and splicing depending on if it's flooded or dry cable.
